The University of the West Indies (UWI) traces its origins to Mona, Jamaica, where it initially started as an overseas medical college affiliated with the University of London in 1948, admitting an initial cohort of thirty-three medical students. It was conceived with the aim of serving the educational needs of the English-speaking Caribbean. By 1963, it had evolved into a truly regional institution, establishing campuses in Jamaica, Trinidad, and Barbados and obtaining the authority to grant its own degrees.
Over the past seven decades, the Faculty of Medical Sciences at UWI has significantly expanded. In 1967, it extended clinical teaching to Trinidad and Barbados under the Eastern Caribbean Medical Scheme. In 1989, a complete medical school was established in Trinidad, followed by the expansion of clinical teaching to Nassau, Bahamas in 1997. In 2008, the clinical program in Barbados was expanded to a comprehensive 5-year program. All of the university’s faculties operate under the governance and policies of their respective campuses, overseen by a centralized administration.
As the oldest faculty within UWI, the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Mona has experienced substantial growth, currently enrolling almost 5000 students. It offers undergraduate programs in various medical fields, including Medicine, Basic Medical Sciences, Nursing, Dentistry, Physical Therapy, Diagnostic Imaging, and Pharmacy. Additionally, there are over 1000 students enrolled in postgraduate programs, including DM Professional Degree programs in various medical specialties, as well as several taught master’s programs such as the Master of Public Health and the MSc in Forensic Science. In 2017, the faculty also had 83 students registered for PhD/MPhil research degrees.
