Guyana, officially known as the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, is situated on the northern mainland of South America. Its unique position within the Caribbean region is due to its strong cultural, historical, and political connections with other Caribbean nations and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Venezuela to the west, and Suriname to the east, Guyana covers an area of 215,000 square kilometers (83,000 sq. mi). Despite being one of the smaller sovereign states in mainland South America, it is noteworthy for its rich diversity.
“The Guianas,” a region encompassing the expansive landmass north of the Amazon River and east of the Orinoco River, is often referred to as the “land of many waters.” Within Guyana, nine distinct indigenous tribes coexist: Wai Wai, Macushi, Patamona, Lokono, Kalina, Wapishana, Pemon, Akawaio, and Warao. While the Lokono and Kalina tribes historically held prominence, Dutch colonization preceded British influence in the late 18th century. The country transitioned from being known as British Guiana to attaining independence in 1966 and becoming a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations in 1970. This history is evident in its political structure and diverse populace, which encompasses Indian, African, Amerindian, Chinese, Portuguese, European, and mixed-race communities.
Economically, Guyana was once dominated by a plantation-style economy until the mid-20th century. It now faces the challenge of poverty, with 41% of its population living below the poverty line as of 2017. English serves as the official language, making Guyana the sole South American nation with such a linguistic distinction. However, the majority of its citizens communicate in Guyanese Creole, an English-based creole language. As an integral part of the Anglophone Caribbean, the country houses the headquarters of CARICOM in its capital and largest city, Georgetown. Additionally, Guyana was a founding member of the Union of South American Nations, solidifying its role within the South American community.
