The American University of Saint Vincent (AUS) is a collaborative effort initiated by prominent physicians and educators from the United States. This consortium is dedicated to advancing healthcare and education through the development of innovative educational methods.
Although relatively new among medical schools in the Caribbean, the AUS School of Medicine has firmly established itself on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The American University of Saint Vincent School of Medicine is aligned with the mission of increasing the availability of physicians to address the healthcare needs of people residing in various regions of the world. The academic environment fosters a deep respect for the diversity of humanity. Students benefit from well-equipped classrooms and clinical experiences designed to prepare them to practice as competent, compassionate, and lifelong learners with a distinct medical philosophy.
To equip aspiring physicians and specialists with the knowledge and values needed to serve humbly and compassionately, emphasizing strong medical ethics and a profound respect for human dignity and worth.
At the American University of Saint Vincent, students engage in a case-based, problem-oriented curriculum known as “problem-based learning” (PBL). This approach emphasizes active learning, involving students in activities such as exploring and discussing, rather than passive learning that involves simply sitting and memorizing.
The Basic Sciences Program at the American University of Saint Vincent is currently structured into five semesters. The first four semesters are conducted at the university’s campus in Saint Vincent and the fifth semester takes place in the United States. During this program, students are required to collaborate on case presentations facilitated by the faculty. They must identify the key objectives of each case and deliver brief presentations based on their assigned objectives. The complexity and depth of these presentations increase as students progress through the basic sciences program.
Furthermore, starting from the first semester of the American University of Saint Vincent Courses, students are exposed to patient care through local Primary Care Clinics. These clinics provide training in medical history-taking, vital sign monitoring, and the diagnostic process.
The Clinical Science Division at the American University of Saint Vincent encompasses the 6th through 10th semesters of study. During this phase, students rotate through various clinical specialties at affiliated teaching hospitals or other approved healthcare facilities. They work under the guidance of clinical faculty and are supervised by the Dean of Clinical Sciences at IAU.
Currently, the American University of Saint Vincent has established agreements with several hospitals, all of which have ACGME-approved programs. These hospitals serve as the primary sites where most of the university’s clinical students are currently completing their rotations.
In the fundamental science phase of American University of Saint Vincent courses, students initially delve into the study of anatomy and the fundamental scientific principles that form the basis of medicine. These principles are applied to each of the body’s organ systems in their healthy state. Subsequently, students explore pathology and pharmacology and apply this knowledge to each of the organ systems in their diseased states.
The initial four semesters of the fundamental sciences take place in St. Vincent, while the fifth semester, often referred to as the “bridge” semester, can be completed in St. Vincent, the United States, or the United Kingdom. It’s important to note that no student can commence their clinical clerkships until they have successfully passed Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination.
The American University of Saint Vincent Courses is structured as follows:
The fundamental science program, spanning the first two years, consists of five semesters, each lasting about four months. It includes lectures, laboratories, case studies, and clinical exposure.
Here’s an overview of what students learn during these years:
The fundamental science curriculum follows a problem-based learning approach, with courses incorporating case studies to reinforce and integrate basic science concepts.
In the third year, students engage in various clinical and hospital-based experiences across family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, surgery, and psychology. This year provides students with valuable exposure to applying their education in real, ongoing clinical scenarios.
The fourth year is an exciting phase where students can tailor many of their clinical rotations to their areas of interest or where they wish to enhance their skills. Students often choose elective rotations based on their residency interests. It’s during this year that students begin the application process for residency programs.
American University of Saint Vincent Admission Step 1:
The American University of St. Vincent School of Medicine operates on a trimester system, offering admissions in September, January, and May, with three semesters per year. Students have the flexibility to apply for admission to the program at any point during the year. Specific dates can be found in the academic calendar.
American University of Saint Vincent Admission Step 2:
Prospective students are strongly encouraged to submit their applications for admission as early as possible.
American University of Saint Vincent Admission Step 3:
Within approximately two weeks after receiving a completed application, an admissions counselor will arrange an interview. This interview can be conducted either over the phone or in person at the university’s campus in St. Vincent. It’s important to note that being granted an interview does not guarantee admission.
The purpose of the admission interview is to assess the applicant in various aspects, including:
The admission interview also allows the student to ask relevant questions and present any special circumstances that should be considered in the admission process.
American University of Saint Vincent Admission Step 4:
Following the admission committee’s interview, the student will be informed of their admission status within approximately two weeks.
Upon receipt of the acceptance letter, the student is required to confirm their intent within 30 days. This can be done by returning the acceptance response form included with the acceptance letter or through any other means of communication with the American University of Saint Vincent Admission Office. If accepting the admission, students must submit the seat deposit fee to the Admission Office approximately 30 days before enrollment. This deposit will be credited towards the first semester’s tuition when the student registers. However, the deposit will not be refunded if the student withdraws their acceptance.
American University of Saint Vincent Admission Step 5:
Acceptance into the American University of Saint Vincent admission program is granted by the admission committee under the assumption that:
It is the responsibility of the student to provide all necessary paperwork for the American University of Saint Vincent admission process by following the checklist provided during the admission procedure.
All required documentation for American University of Saint Vincent admission must be part of the student’s record before enrollment and orientation.
The American University of Saint Vincent reserves the right to revoke a candidate’s acceptance, dismiss a student, or void a diploma if it is subsequently discovered that false or incorrect information was submitted.
Students begin interacting with patients in their first academic term. This exposure to clinical environments continues throughout subsequent terms, including local clinics and faculty-supervised events.
To adequately prepare students for US Licensure, they undergo an approved USMLE Review program integrated into the curriculum. Completed in the fifth term, this course offers a comprehensive review of the Basic Sciences in anticipation of the USMLE Step 1 Exam.
Visible Body, an interactive software, is provided to each student at AUSSOM. Accessible through computers or mobile devices, the application features over 5,000 3D models of the human body, covering gross anatomy, microanatomy, physiological processes, and pathologies.
Utilizing highly realistic adult and pediatric simulators, students gain essential hands-on clinical experience in diagnosing and treating patients. Under the careful guidance of our faculty, students apply their knowledge in simulating, visualizing, and addressing real clinical scenarios.
Students actively participate in events at local clinics, organize blood drives, and host community health fairs with the goal of giving back to the community. This involvement provides students with early exposure to clinical settings, allowing them to interact with patients from the beginning of their academic journey.
All faculty members at American University of Saint Vincent hold advanced medical or doctoral degrees in their respective fields. Beyond classroom instruction, our distinguished educators offer student guidance and foster an environment of unparalleled excellence. Extensive student-teacher interaction helps students prepare for the USMLE Step 1 Exam.
With a low student-to-faculty ratio, AUS ensures personalized attention to enhance the classroom experience. Extensive interaction between students and teachers aids in preparing students for the USMLE Step 1 Exam.
